Women’s History Month: Celebrating Women in Marketing & Business

March is Women’s History Month, a time to recognize the achievements of women throughout history and in today’s industries. At K Marketing Co., we’re especially proud to celebrate women in marketing, highlighting the incredible contributions of our female-led team and sharing insights for women navigating the business world.

From the leadership of our female founder to the creativity and expertise of our predominantly female team members, we believe in empowering women to succeed in marketing and beyond. In honor of Women’s History Month, we’re reflecting on our journey, the impact of women in marketing, and essential advice for female entrepreneurs.

A Female-Led Business: Our Founder, Megan Kalbach’s Journey to Starting K Marketing Co.

I come from a long line of entrepreneurs; owning my own business has always felt like part of my DNA. My great-grandfather started both a furniture company and a propane gas company. My grandfather took over the propane business, while my great-aunt continued running the furniture company. Years later, my mom started a successful consignment shop in our basement when I was little. By the time I was in school, she sold that business and joined my uncle, becoming the third generation to oversee our family’s propane company, Kauffman Gas. Today, that legacy continues with the fourth generation at the helm!

I have vivid childhood memories of playing hide-and-seek among consignment shop racks, pretending to be “CEO” at an old green metal desk in the storage room, helping my dad organize supplies, and rearranging displays in my great-aunt’s furniture store. Growing up, I experienced firsthand the work ethic, commitment, and pride that come with running a family-owned business. Even as a child, I dabbled in entrepreneurial ventures: raising rabbits, selling tomatoes, flipping items on Craigslist, and eventually becoming an independent beauty consultant with Mary Kay at 24. Through that experience, I discovered my passion for entrepreneurship, the thrill of pursuing goals, and—most importantly—my love of helping others build their own businesses.

Over the next ten years, I worked around my young children’s schedules, learning the ins and outs of marketing, system-building, and sustainable growth. When COVID hit, I seized the chance to evolve again, starting a new business that initially offered a little bit of everything: crafting, reselling, event planning, store displays, website design, and social media management. This phase helped me identify what I enjoyed, what was profitable, and what wasn’t. Armed with that knowledge, in January 2024, I established K Marketing Co.

From being a child in a multi-generation family business to becoming a young mother learning entrepreneurship through a structured parent company, to now running a successful business on track to reach a million dollars in revenue this year, I’ve gathered some valuable insights. Here are my top 10 tips—I hope they inspire you!

  1. Know What You Truly Want: Being an entrepreneur isn’t for everyone, just as teaching isn’t for everyone. We each have unique strengths and motivations. I love being an entrepreneur, and my family understands the lifestyle that comes with it. It fits who we are.

  2. Simply Start: If you want to be an entrepreneur, you have to be a starter. Stop talking and dreaming—start doing. You won’t know everything at the outset, and that’s okay. You’ll learn and fail along the way; it’s part of the journey.

  3. Have Financial Peace: Every business I started was built with cash I already had. I reinvested profits, letting the business grow at the speed of cash. Living below our means for years gave me the freedom to grow my business from a place of passion, not from fear of being unable to provide for our family.

  4. Keep Growing—Personally and Professionally: You’ve likely heard, “You become like the five people you spend the most time with.” Surround yourself with people who breathe positivity, belief, and strength into you, not doom and gloom.

  5. Value Your Time: I’ve run a business while pregnant, with newborns, with school-age kids, and soon, with a high-schooler. In each season, I’ve adjusted my schedule and workload to fit our family’s needs. Balance isn’t about allocating equal time to everything; it’s about being fully present where you need to be. Learn to say “no” to opportunities that would throw that balance off.

  6. Trust Your Gut—and Be Willing to Pivot: You’re going to fail, make mistakes, and lose money at times. Embrace these lessons, trust your intuition, and move forward.

  7. Invest in the Right People: You can’t grow a business alone—it takes a village. This includes your family, support system, mentors, staff, clients, and vendors. When you invest in others, they will invest in and support you, too.

  8. Know Your Profit and Loss: As you grow, continually evaluate your operating costs, profit margins, and pricing. Healthy finances are critical for long-term success.

  9. Establish Your Brand: Know who you are, what you do, and why you do it—and make sure the world knows it. A clear brand identity guides which opportunities to embrace and which to decline.

  10. Build Systems: Systems are the backbone of any scalable business. They’ll evolve as you grow, but having strong systems in place is crucial to sustainable success.

"Take those first steps, invest your time and passion, and trust that your dreams are well within reach. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it!" - Megan
